Avery Research Center for African History and Culture, at the College of Charleston, 125 Bull St., Charleston. Denmark Vesey Conference Room, Onging - "KABOH: A Legacy of Twelve." Charleston Quilter Dorothy Montgomery made "KABOH" in honor of the "Priscilla" story. The quilt was in the possession of Dr. Joseph Opala who donated it to the Avery Research Center in July, 2008. Corridor (2nd Floor), Ongoing - "Esau Jenkins: A Retrospective View of the Man and His Times" This exhibition was developed in 1991 by the Avery Institute. After its display in Charleston it traveled throughout the state of SC under the auspices of the State Museum Traveling Exhibition Program. Consisting of (15) panels measuring 24" x 36", the exhibit chronicles the myriad of activities Mr. Jenkins was intimately involved in. City Gallery at Waterfront Park, 34 Prioleau Street, Charleston. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month the Charleston County Public Library will display a traveling exhibit featuring the paintings of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Columbia Museum of Art, Main & Hampton Streets, Columbia. Lipscomb Family Galleries, Through Sept. 5 - "Innovation and Change: Great Ceramics from the Ceramics Research Center". This exhibition highlights 75 masterworks by many of the leading international ceramic artists, offering a panoramic survey of the potential of clay as an expressive art form. The art objects on view range from functional ware for everyday use to more expressive sculptural forms. Oct. 1 - Jan. 23, 2011 - "I Heard a Voice: The Art of Lesley Dill". This exhibition of contemporary American artist Lesley Dill focuses on her most recent large-scale theatrical work, including sculpture, installations, photographs and a video of the artist. This is the first retrospective exhibition of the artist of this scale. Wachovia Education Gallery, Through Sept. 12 - "Columbia Green: Year of the Tree". In partnership with Columbia Green, this student exhibition is based on a connection between science and art. Participating schools include Hand Middle School, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School and Center for Inquiry. Mamie and William Andrew Treadway, Jr. Gallery 15, Through Sept. 19 - "SC6: Six South Carolina Innovators in Clay". Drawn from public and private collections, six innovative ceramic artists who are, or have been active in South Carolina are featured in this Gallery 15 installation. The works illustrate a diverse range of technique, glazes and forms for which the artists are best known. Featured artists include: Russell Biles, from Greenville, whose figural sculptures are deeply laden with social and political commentary; Jim Connell, whose sinuous vessels are decorated with elaborate glazes, many of which are inspired by ancient Chinese ceramics; Georgia Henrietta Harris, a member of the Catawba Nation, who is largely credited with reviving the Catawba pottery tradition; Peter Lenzo, whose technically complex sculptures recall the 19th century Southern "face jug" tradition yet remain completely unique; Ron Meyers, whose functional ceramics are brightly slip-painted in a gestural, expressionistic style that can be both provocative and confrontational; and Virginia Scotchie, current chair of the ceramics department at USC, who incorporates familiar shapes when creating her vessels that possess complex and luminous glazes. Dawn Helfont Christopher Galleries, Through Sept. 19 - "Imperial Splendor: Renaissance Tapestries from Vienna". Royal Renaissance tapestries from one of the premier museums of fine arts and decorative arts in the world, the Kunsthistorisches of Vienna. The richness and artistic quality of the tapestries make the collection one of the most important tapestry collections in the world and one of the most magnificent of its kind. Each of these eight exquisite tapestries, intricately crafted, measures from 11- to 12-feet high and from 12- to 18-feet long. The tapestries came to the Kunsthistorisches Museum from the collections of King Matthias (Holy Roman Emperor 1612-1619) and King Francis I (1708-1765). A Tapestry Symposium will be held on June 11, 2010, in conjunction with the exhibition. The exhibition marks the first time these centuries-old tapestries have traveled to the United States. This exhibition is developed by the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. BB&T Focus Gallery, Ongoing - "Southern Traditions," will showcase the richness and diversity of the Museum's collection of furniture, ceramics, silver, basketry, sculpture and paintings by artists native to, or active in, South Carolina and its surrounding states. Among the works on view will be fine silver made by Charleston and Columbia silversmiths; a sweet grass basket by Mary Jackson (SC, born 1945); wood carvings by Edgar Alexander McKillop (NC, 1879-1950); and paintings by Charles Fraser (SC, 1782-1860), Xanthus Russell Smith (SC, 1839-1929), William Harrison Scarborough (SC, 1812-1871), William Aiken Walker (SC, 1838-1921), among others. Ray Taylor Fair Gallery, Ongoing - Featuring a new and permanent installation of its ancient art collection. The installation includes approximately 50 objects that introduce the major ancient civilizations from the Mediterranean and Near East. Examples of the earliest form of writing from 12th century B.C. Mesopotamia, are shown next to Egyptian scarabs and Greek painted vessels. The world of the ancient Romans is represented by 2nd century glass and bronze items and portrait sculpture. Many of these works have not been seen since the Museum moved to its location on Main Street in 1998. The collection has grown over the last several years with the donation of 12 fine Roman sculptures in 2002 from Pennsylvania collector Dr. Robert Y. Turner. McKissick Museum, University of South Carolina, USC Horseshoe, Columbia. Lobby Gallery, Through Dec. 14 - "A People of the Land: Lowcountry Portraits." Vennie Deas-Moore has devoted much of her career to the exploration of vanishing traditions along the South Carolina coast. Her recent photographic essay of black-and-white photographs documents the fishing, timbering and farming industries of South Carolina's Lowcountry through the portraiture of those who inhabit the waterways. As a native of McClellanville, SC, she presents an "insider's" unromantic view of places and people seldom seen. Her photographs present the connections between culture and work. 2nd Floor South Gallery, Through Dec. 14 - "The Art of Environmental Awareness: The Batiks of Mary Edna Fraser". Known internationally, Fraser uses batik, an ancient medium of waxing and hand dyeing cloth, to express issues of climate change and the long-term effects on the environment. Her vivid large-scale aerial views of barrier islands, coastal regions, and rivers reference the geological and geographical studies used to document the changing face of the landscape. 2nd Floor North Gallery, Through Dec. 18 - "SilverYana: The Photographic Works of F. Tobias Morriss". Morris came to Columbia, SC, in 2005 fleeing the ravished gulf coast following Hurricane Katrina. A remarkably popular instructor in USC's Department of Art, Morriss mentored dozens of photography students who remained in close contact with him long after they completed their studies. Morriss was renowned for his stark and haunting images produced almost exclusively in black and white through the silver gelatin process. This major retrospective exhibition will include approximately 50 artworks by the important American artist Edmund D. Lewandowski. As both a precisionist painter and an art educator, Edmund Lewandowski played a leading role in the development of American modernism. As the former chair of the Department of Art and Design at Winthrop from 1973 - 1984, he was committed to Winthrop students and the surrounding community. 200 quilts, all made by LMQG members, will be on display. The
Oconee Heritage Quilt Trail will celebrate their grand kick-off
in conjunction with the Quilt Show. The Festival features quilts

bed quilts to art quilt wall hangings, wearables and other quilted
home decor. Demonstrations, special exhibits reflecting guild
projects and challenges, and displays honoring special guild members

Kent Ullberg is one of the world's leading wildlife sculptors. His monumental body of sculpture will be represented by 48 bronze and stainless-steel castings and models of proud animals, plus photo enlargements of grand outdoor installations. Sep 14 - Nov 20 - "Andy Warhol & Friends: 5 Minutes of Fame." This exhibit features a body of the infamous Polaroids. As they were used as studies for other works, most of the Polaroids were never exhibited during Warhol's lifetime. These intimate glimpses of celebrity and the ordinary are balanced by other works by Jim Dine, Edward Hill & Suzanne Bloom, Claes Oldenburg, and Phyllis Yes.
