Redux Contemporary Art Center, featuring Redux Studios, 136 St. Philip Street, Charleston. Through July 13 - "Self Control: New Paintings by Artist in Residence Jeff Zimmermann". Zimmermann is an internationally renowned pop art muralist and large-scale painter. He will create paintings in the gallery space as well as on the façade of Redux during a three week residency from May 4-20. The public is encouraged to visit the gallery during the installation to view Zimmermann's process of transforming the gallery space. The Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting Street, Charleston. Founded

"From Slave to Sharecropper: African Americans in the Lowcountry
after the Civil War," presents an original exhibition to
commemorate the bicentennial of the abolition of the international
slave trade in the United States and the British Empire. The exhibit
will be centered around the recollections and memories of Lowcountry
descendants of slaves and sharecroppers. It will include artifacts
and images of African American experiences in the Lowcountry after

Columbia Area
Columbia Museum of Art, Main & Hampton Streets, Columbia. Through Sept. 27 - "Cleve Gray: Man and Nature," featuring a 30-year retrospective of noted American painter Cleve Gray. The exhibition illustrates the full progression of Gray's career as he developed his signature gestural style between 1970 and 2004, the year he died at age 86. "Man and Nature" is the first comprehensive touring exhibition of Gray's work and is the only museum exhibition to date to focus on his mature abstraction. The 47 paintings in the show follow the development of the artist's color-infused abstractions, his responses to his extensive travels, and his deep understanding of European and American modernism and Asian sources. Mamie and William Andrew Treadway, Jr. Gallery 15, July 18 - Oct. 4 - "Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg: 20th Century Masters in the Collection". Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenburg are considered two of the pioneering artists of the mid 20th century in America and the leading figures in the American pop art movement. Legendary gallery owner Leo Castelli represented both in the 1950s. The two were close friends, saw each other's work daily and had a considerable influence upon one another. Both Johns and Rauschenberg, in different ways, reintroduced figurative subject matter to painting, and they are credited with inspiring the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop art. This installation, drawn from work in the Museum's collection, explores the visual relationship between these two artists and friends. BB&T Focus Gallery, Ongoing - "Southern Traditions," will showcase the richness and diversity of the Museum's collection of furniture, ceramics, silver, basketry, sculpture and paintings by artists native to, or active in, South Carolina and its surrounding states. Among the works on view will be fine silver made by Charleston and Columbia silversmiths; a sweet grass basket by Mary Jackson (SC, born 1945); wood carvings by Edgar Alexander McKillop (NC, 1879-1950); and paintings by Charles Fraser (SC, 1782-1860), Xanthus Russell Smith (SC, 1839-1929), William Harrison Scarborough (SC, 1812-1871), William Aiken Walker (SC, 1838-1921), among others. Ray Taylor Fair Gallery, Ongoing - Featuring a new and permanent installation of its ancient art collection. The installation includes approximately 50 objects that introduce the major ancient civilizations from the Mediterranean and Near East. Examples of the earliest form of writing from 12th century B.C. Mesopotamia, are shown next to Egyptian scarabs and Greek painted vessels. The world of the ancient Romans is represented by 2nd century glass and bronze items and portrait sculpture. Many of these works have not been seen since the Museum moved to its location on Main Street in 1998. The collection has grown over the last several years with the donation of 12 fine Roman sculptures in 2002 from Pennsylvania collector Dr. Robert Y. Turner. McKissick Museum, University of South Carolina, USC Horseshoe, Columbia. July 11 - Jan. 16, 2010 - "Urban Archaeology in Columbia, SC. Through Aug. 1 - "Worth Keeping! Traditions in the Permanent Collection." This exhibit showcases McKissick Museum's often unseen permanent collections of traditional art. These treasures, which are conserved, preserved and researched by the museum, include hand-made traditional quilts, baskets and pottery as well as video, audio and artifacts related to other traditional art forms such as music, cooking and storytelling. These teaching collections help illuminate these traditions. Through Aug. 15 - "Order Now! Decorating the Modern Home". The exhibit explores the relationship between trade catalogs and decorative arts. The exhibit looks at how objects are advertised as a method to define status and influence personal taste. Greenville County Museum of Art, 420 College Street, Greenville. Through Sept. 27 - "Jasper Johns: Just Thinking of a Series of Dreams". A tour of the art of South Carolina would not be complete without considering the work of Jasper Johns. The title is drawn from a Bob Dylan song. The exhibition explores the enigmatic "Green Angel" images as well as the face motif inspired by Picasso. Don't miss the new additions to the Museum's Johns collection, in addition to iconic favorites such as "Flags 1," 1987, and the autobiographical 1987 series, "The Seasons". Through Oct. 4 - "Unpainting". An exhibition of things that aren't - painting, that is - from wall hangings and assemblages to drawings and photography. Through Oct. 11 - "Andrew Wyeth: The Greenville Collection". Greenville's prestigious in-depth collection of works by America's Painter, Andrew Wyeth, spans seventy years of the artist's masterful watercolors. Paintings by his father N.C. Wyeth and son Jamie Wyeth are included in this exhibition, which also features the newly-acquired watercolor, "Eagle Quill," 2007, and the drybrush watercolor "Four Poster," 1946, a gift from Spartanburg textile executive Roger Milliken. Through Oct. 24 - "William H. Johnson: Native Son". This exhibition traces the evolution of an important African-American artist who was a native of Florence, SC, William H. Johnson. The Greenville County Museum of Art is one of the few nationally with a survey collection of this modernist painter. Through Jan. 3, 2010 - "Art & Artists of South Carolina". The exhibition brings together paintings, prints, and sculpture that testify to war and peace, politics, class struggle, and the wonders of nature. It includes many recent additions to the museum's collection, including a large alkaline-glazed storage jar by the slave potter Dave Drake, an 1851 marble bust of Catherine Hampton by Hiram Powers, and William Aiken Walker's 1881 painting, "a Southern Plantation". Spartanburg Art Museum, Chapman Cultural Arts Center, 200 East St. John Street, Spartanburg. July 28 - Oct. 10 - "The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg 36th Annual Juried Exhibition". Formed in October of 1957, the AGS is among the longest-lived visual arts organizations in South Carolina. This annual event is a benchmark of the guild's success, always impressing outside judges with the amount of talent that resides in Spartanburg, Cherokee, Greenville, Laurens, Polk, Rutherford, and Union Counties in North and South Carolina. Through Aug. 1 - "Betty Bramlett: Past and Present". Bramlett served for four decades as coordinator of fine arts for Spartanburg County School District 7, influencing generations of students and teachers. She has received the state's Elizabeth O'Neill Verner award for outstanding service in art education, as well as being recognized as Regional Supervisor of the Year in the Southeast. Her abstract work is familiar in local galleries, juried exhibitions, and collections, including those of Greenville City Hall, Mary Black Hospital and the South Carolina Arts Commission.
