Explore Gallery, Ongoing - "The Charleston Renaissance: An Artistic Reawakening". Fifty years after the Civil War ended, artists such as Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, Elizabeth OíNeill Verner, Anna Heyward Taylor, and Alfred Hutty created artwork that kindled a new appreciation among Charlestonís citizens for the cityís physical environment and lowcountry character. The Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting Street, Charleston. Founded
in 1773, is America's first museum. Through Feb. 28, 2009 - "From
Slave to Sharecropper: African Americans in the Lowcountry after
the Civil War," presents an original exhibition to commemorate
the bicentennial of the abolition of the international slave trade
in the United States and the British Empire. The exhibit will
be centered around the recollections and memories of Lowcountry
descendants of slaves and sharecroppers. It will include artifacts
and images of African American experiences in the Lowcountry after
the Civil War from the Museum's collection. Ongoing - Featuring
the most extensive collection of South Carolina cultural and scientific
collections in the nation, it also owns two National Historic
Landmark houses, the Heyward-Washington House (1772) and the Joseph

Columbia Area
Columbia Museum of Art, Main & Hampton Streets, Columbia. Lipscomb Family Galleries, Through Aug. 17 - "Carolina Collects," presents a major summer exhibition which celebrates the spirit of private collectors who have been instrumental in the formation and continued vitality of art collections throughout the state. Visitors get a first-hand look into private collections of South Carolinians, with hidden gems including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, furniture, decorative arts and photography from a wide range of historical time periods. The exhibition is presented by Carolina First. Mamie and William Andrew Treadway, Jr. Gallery, Through Oct. 26 - "Constantine Manos: The Greek Portfolio". Offered in conjunction with exhibition "Carolina Collects." the work of South Carolina native Constantine Manos is featured. The Greek Portfolio represents an impromptu pictorial account of Manos' travels through rural Greece and the Greek islands. In frame after frame he reveals with warmth, feeling and understanding a way of life that had remained virtually unchanged for centuries but was destined for extinction as the youth of these small country villages and secluded farms left for the opportunities in the city. BB&T Focus Gallery, Through July 20 - "Found Heaven: The Lowcountry of Alfred Heber Hutty," featuring a new installation of 24 works by Charleston Renaissance artist Alfred Heber Hutty. The installation includes one of only two pastel drawings known to exist by Hutty as well as a selection of etchings, drypoints, paintings and drawings by Hutty (1878-1954). Ray Taylor Fair Gallery, Ongoing - Featuring a new and permanent installation of its ancient art collection. The installation includes approximately 50 objects that introduce the major ancient civilizations from the Mediterranean and Near East. Examples of the earliest form of writing from 12th century B.C. Mesopotamia, are shown next to Egyptian scarabs and Greek painted vessels. The world of the ancient Romans is represented by 2nd century glass and bronze items and portrait sculpture. Many of these works have not been seen since the Museum moved to its location on Main Street in 1998. The collection has grown over the last several years with the donation of 12 fine Roman sculptures in 2002 from Pennsylvania collector Dr. Robert Y. Turner. Through Jan. 4, 2009 - "The South Carolina State Museum: 20 Years of Treasures," featuring a special exhibit dedicated to objects that it has collected over the past two decades. Lipscomb Gallery, Through Sept. 7 - "State Museum 20th Anniversary Juried Art Exhibition," juried by Lia Newman, director of programs and exhibitions at Artspace in Raleigh, NC, and artist Brian Rutenberg, a native of Myrtle Beach, SC, who now works in New York City.
