Clemson University in Clemson, SC, is offering the following lecture(s) including: On Sept, 23, 2010, at 5:30pm in Lee Hall -Artist Presentation by Janet Williams about the exhibit, "Touch, Texts and Topographies: The work of Janet Williams". Free and open to the public. On Oct. 8, 2010, 5-6pm in Lee Gallery - Artist Gallery Discussion with Jacinda Russell & Nancy Douthey about "In Search of the Center". Free and open to the public. On Oct. 21, 2010, at 6pm, room 111 Lee Hall - Visiting Artist Lecture with Rich Pell. Richard Pell is an artist working at the intersections of science, engineering and culture. He is the founder of the Center for Post Natural History, an outreach center dedicated to the collection and exposition of genetically engineered life-forms. The Center has been awarded a Rockefeller New Media fellowship, a Creative Capital fellowship, a Smithsonian research fellowship and is currently in residence at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon. Pell is a founding member of the highly acclaimed art and engineering collective, the Institute for Applied Autonomy. IAA projects have been exhibited in art and engineering contexts such as the SKM in Karlsruhe, Mass MoCA, Ars Electronica, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Hackers on Planet Earth and the International Conference on Robotics and Automation. IAA projects have been presented with an award of Distinction and two Honorable Mentions at the Prix-Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria and were selected for RES Magazine's "10 Best New Artists of 2005". Free and open to the public. On Oct. 22, 2010, 10am-3pm, Lee & Freeman Halls - Center for Visual Arts Open House/Open Studio. All graduate and undergraduate studios in Lee and Freeman Halls are open to the public. Come and get your hands dirty or just watch artists create their work. Ceramics, Drawing, Photography, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Wood Design will be open to the university public. On Nov. 17, 2010, at 12:15pm in Lee Gallery - Lunchtime Lecture with Jennifer Miller and David Rigdon about "Creatures of Habit". Free and open to the public. The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs will offer the following lecture(s) including: On Oct. 2, 2010, at 2pm at City Gallery at Waterfront Park - Artist Lecture - Susan Lenz will talke about "Personal Grounds", her solo exhibition by installation which is part of the annual MOJA Arts Festival. Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, will present the following lecture(s) including: Sept. 1 - Oct. 1, 2010, every Wed. from 10am-11am - Lecture Series: Picasso to Dali, by Dr. Brad Collins. Collins lectures on the lives and careers of prolific contemporary artists. Using the careers of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali as guiding points throughout the lecture series, Collins discusses the art and the significance with critical and art historical perspective. Dr. Collins is an associate professor of art history at the University of South Carolina. Fee $80 for non-members; $64 for members for the series; and $15 for individual lecture tickets. To register, visit (www.columbiamuseum.org). On Sept. 3, 2010, at 1pm - SC6 Artist Series: Gallery Talk with ceramic artist Virginia Scotchie. Scotchie says, "I have an obsession with spouts, handles and knobs. This probably comes from being a potter when I first worked in clay. I think it is also about wanting my work to be verb-like in its reference to the everyday." The SC6 Artist Series features gallery talks with the six ceramic artists represented in the Gallery 15 installation, "SC6: Six South Carolina Innovators in Clay". Free with admission or membership. The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, is offering the following lecture(s) including: In Nov., 2010, the Gibbes will celebrate the many contributions of women in art in a three-part lecture series presented in partnership with the Center for Women on Nov. 3, 10 & 17, 2010, presenting the Women in the Arts Lecture Series. The Green Hill Center for NC Art in Greensboro, NC, will offer the following lecture(s) including: On Sept. 22, 2010, 5:30-6:30pm - Artist Talk - Mark Nystrom of Boone, NC. Nystrom is an artist, designer, photographer and is an assistant professor at Appalachian State University. Free and open to the public. On Oct. 6, 2010, 5:30-7pm - Artist Talk - James McMillan of Greensboro, NC. McMillan is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Guilford College. In the course of his distinguished career he has produced drawings, paintings, and sculpture, inspired by a variety of experiences ranging from growing up in rural North Carolina, to studying in Paris, and to his activism in the civil rights movement. McMillan will speak about his experiences as an expatriate American artist in Paris following World War II. Free and open to the public. On Oct. 13, 2010, 5:30-6:30pm - Artist Talk - Jason Craighead of Raleigh, NC. Craighead is a recognized leader in the North Carolina art scene. His work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the Southeastern United States. Free and open to the public. On Oct. 20, 2010, 5:30-6:30pm - Artist Talk - Alia E. El-Bermani of Cary, NC. El-Bermani is a contemporary realist whose principal subjects include women and still lifes. El-Bermani's paintings question traditional notions of beauty and femininity. The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, will offer the following lecture(s) including: On Nov. 10, 2010, at 7pm, in Room 309 in the Simons Center for the Arts, 54 Saint Philip St. - lecture and book signing with Kendall Messick. The event is free and open to the public. Messick is a photographer, filmmaker and installation artist whose photographs from the series "Impermanence" will be shown at Rebekah Jacob Gallery. Mark Sloan, Halsey Director and Senior Curator, has written an essay for Messick's recently published book, "The Projectionist", which will be presented at the lecture.
