Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will offer the following lecture(s) including: On Feb. 6, 2009, at noon - Gallery Talk - "Recent Animals," with Allison Hunter. Her exhibition, "Recent Animals", explores her interest in making people think about how they perceive and respond to the elements of the world around them that are often marginalized or overlooked. Hunter approaches this problem in her artwork by taking things, usually animals, out of context to show their beauty, grace, and uniqueness. She often removes elements from the original image to allow the viewer to focus more intently on the process of displacement and reinterpretation. Bring a bag lunch! Free and open to the public. On Feb. 26, 2009, at 6:30pm - Gallery Talk - "Chapter & Verse", with former R.E.A.R artist Marie Cordella. The works featured in Cordella's exhibition were predominantly created during her Artspace residency, July 2008 Jan., 2009. The works span two categories: ready-to-wear and costume. Cordella's collection displays a highly diversified aesthetic, and a contrast of materials and forms. Displayed in chronological order Cordella believes that the works demonstrate the development over time of her craft and her fine tailoring skills. Each creation is a detailed study of technique, composition, intuition, and the history of fashion. Bring a bag lunch! Free and open to the public. Melissa Chiu's new book, "Contemporary Chinese Art: 7 Things You Should Know," offers an accessible guide to understanding Chinese contemporary art: what you need to know about the artists, the art market, and what can legitimately be called a new art movement, perhaps the first great art movement of the 21st century. Free with museum admission or membership. On Apr. 5, 2009, at 3pm - Lecture: "Traditions and Transformations in Chinese Art". As one of the first Americans to matriculate in the prestigious Beijing Central Art Academy, artist Janet Kosachek learned painting and writing from living legends and brings their work to life in an illustrated lecture based on the paintings in the Beijing Central Art Academy collections and other museum collections in mainland China. With artifacts on hand that can be handled and observed at close range, Ms. Kozachek reads short excerpts from her upcoming book, "Another Soul" that details colorful eyewitness accounts of Chinese masters at work. Kozachek traveled to China in the early 1980's - an historic time when the country tentatively opened to the west after having been isolated for three decades of political turmoil. In the decade before China would become overwhelmed by industrialization, and influenced by western economic and social modernism, there was a rebirth of traditional art practices and Kozachek studied the art of calligraphy, stone seal carvings, xie yi painting, gong bi painting, and landscape painting from nine different masters.
