Applications are now available for artists and arts organizations seeking grant support from the Expansion Arts Fund of Coastal Community Foundation. Priority will be given to minority, rural and economically disadvantaged artists, and for art that reflects the Lowcountry heritage. To be eligible, artists must live and work in Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester or Georgetown County (SC) and have at least three years' experience in their art forms or craft. The deadline for grant proposals is Jan. 26, 2009. Small and emerging arts organizations may apply for up to $5,000 for organizational development, the production of original works, exhibits of new and important community artists, renewed performances of classic repertoires of a particular culture, or for the research, preservation and development of indigenous art forms. Individual artists may apply for up to $2,500 to seek professional development, produce new work, reach new audiences, or research indigenous art forms. The Expansion Arts Fund at Coastal Community Foundation was created in 1988 thanks to local donors who responded positively to a challenge issued by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to create a local funding source to provide grants to "Expansion Artists". Area contributions of $60,000 matched the $60,000 from the NEA to create the Expansion Arts Fund. Since then, the Fund has grown from $120,000 to a corpus of $227,000 and has given out nearly $250,000 in grants. That's the power of endowed giving. The Fund grows over time while grants continue to support the arts. It's a win-win charitable formula. The Expansion Arts Program is conducted in alternate years. In 2007, applications were accepted from Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties (SC). In 2009, applications will be accepted from Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester and Georgetown Counties. The Expansion Arts Program was strengthened by additional grant dollars in 2002 when the John & Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund, was created through a bequest by John Bennett, local Charleston attorney, patron of the arts, and benefactor, to honor the memory of his grandparents. Coastal Community Foundation stimulates and channels local philanthropy through its various separate grantmaking funds.  Donors create perpetual endowments, whose grants may benefit specific organizations, specific purposes, or general philanthropy. The Expansion Arts Endowment is one of more than 525 endowments managed by the Foundation. For complete information about the Expansion Arts Fund and an application, contact Tasha Tucker, Program Associate at 843/723-3635 or e-mail to (Tasha@CoastalCommunityFoundation.org). Guidelines and applications are also available on our website at (www.CoastalCommunityFoundation.org).  Established in 1974, Coastal Community Foundation is a public grant making foundation fostering philanthropy for the lasting good of the community in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton and Jasper Counties. Thousands of families, businesses, individuals and organizations have built over 525 individual funds and endowments at the Foundation to benefit specific charities and/or broad areas of community life education, basic human needs, conservation and preservation, arts, health and neighborhood/community development. In its 34-year history, Coastal Community Foundation has awarded more than $75 million in grants and manages assets in excess of $119 million. Last year, Foundation funds generated over $11.7 million for charitable programming, community projects, educational initiatives and scholarships. The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, is pleased to announce the second year of the Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art. The Factor Prize, given annually with a cash prize of $10,000, acknowledges an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of the South. Unlike any other award of its type, the Factor Prize is designed to create an online archive of information about Southern artists that can be used by curators, collectors, academicians and the public. The Factor Prize goes to an artist whose work demonstrates the highest level of artistic achievement in any media. The prize may be awarded to an artist who has already produced a body of significant work or whose work shows considerable promise. Eligible artists are those who reside, work or are from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. The winner of the 2008 Factor Prize was photographer Jeff Whetstone of Chapel Hill, NC. Whetstone will serve as a judge for the 2009 prize. The donors, Elizabeth and Mallory Factor, established the Factor Prize to bring attention to fine artists from the South or that are working in the South. The Factors are devoted collectors and patrons of the arts. Elizabeth Factor, an attorney, was on the board of the Drawing Center and on the Whitney's Photography Committee while in New York City. Mallory Factor, a merchant banker and consultant, serves on many corporate and not-for-profit boards including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the American Theatre Wing and the TONY Awards Administration Committee. All artists who entered on the Factor Prize website in 2008 (except those that made the Short List of Finalists) are automatically registered for the 2009 award. New nominations are now being accepted through Jan. 30, 2009 at (www.factorprize.org). A nominating committee will select the finalists in February 2009 and the Gibbes Museum of Art will announce the winner in May 2009. Established as the Carolina Art Association in 1858 (celebrating 150 years in 2008), the Gibbes Museum of Art opened its doors to the public in 1905.  Located in Charleston's historic district, the Gibbes houses a premier collection of over 10,000 works, principally American with a Charleston or Southern connection and presents special exhibitions throughout the year. In addition, the museum offers an extensive complement of public programming and educational outreach initiatives that serve the community by stimulating creative expression and improving the region's superb quality of life.
